WHAT CAUSES RP? One child per 3000 births in Australia is born with RP. It can strike in a family with no known history. It results from an imperfection in a tiny gene that causes an incorrect protein to be supplied to the retina. This causes photoreceptor cells to die, causing progressive vision loss.
