THE Salvation Army celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2015, holding the 50th annual Australian Red Shield Appeal this weekend.

Salvation Army spokesman Darren Aitken said the non-profit organisation hoped to raise $860,000 in WA and $9.5 million across the nation, and was reliant on the support of the public to carry out its work in the community.

“The Red Shield Appeal is the lifeline and pulse for the Salvation Army, which allows us to meet a range of complex social needs that alone we simply could not consider possible,” he said.

“The Salvation Army seeks to provide support to the least, the lost and the last, and our greatest concern is for the wellbeing of our communities.”

Mr Aitken said the organisation provided more than food and shelter to those in need, offering opportunities for people to involve themselves in a community through choirs, early learning centres and connect groups. “Through The Red Shield Appeal, we can provide a safe place for women and children experiencing domestic violence, a bed for someone experiencing homelessness, a food voucher or advocating for someone who needs a voice of support.”

The State Government committed $60,000 towards the Red Shield Appeal earlier this month.

Premier Colin Barnett encouraged the public to donate to the appeal, which will involve hundreds of volunteers doorknocking on May 30 and 31.

“The Red Shield Appeal is an essential fundraising campaign that allows the Salvation Army to continue to provide support to many West Australians,” he said.

The Salvation Army assists more than 100,000 West Australians each year through 63 social programs.
