Morton stars for Demons

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Sport - Mark Thornber

PERTH Demons paid the price for a poor third quarter in which Claremont Tigers piled on nine goals as the Tigers ran out winners by 44 points in the annual battle for the Pyke Cup.

The Tigers were on the scoreboard in the opening minute after a goal to Kepler Bradley.

The Demons responded with their first goal to full forward Mitch Morton.

In an even first term, the Tigers held a lead of nine points after kicking four goals three to three goals.

In the second term the height advantage of the visitors caused headaches for the Demons’ backline, as Bradley combined with Beau Maister up forward and Mark Seaby was on top in the ruck.

Adian Tropiano and Dene White were in the thick of things for the Demons, but it was the visitors who opened up a four-goal lead half-way through the quarter.

The Demons responded as late goals to Jarryd Morton and a clever running major to Brett Wolfenden reduced the Tigers’ lead to just 10 points at half time.

The second half started well for the Demons with Jarryd Morton kicking his fourth goal, but this seemed to spark the Tigers into action and a couple of undisciplined free kicks had the Tigers pile on the next seven goals to go into three-quarter time with a commanding lead.

The last term had the Demons fight the match out with Tropiano gaining plenty of the ball in the midfield as Jarryd Morton was starring up forward to boot his fifth and sixth goals.

The Tigers again steadied half way through the quarter as both teams managed four goals each.

Jarryd Morton was outstanding for the Demons and finished with seven goals, and was well supported by hard-running midfielders Tropiano.

Next week Perth return home to play the Black and Whites.
