Dry July to fight cancer
ELLY Thompson loves a drink but is giving up alcohol for a month to raise funds for cancer.
Ms Thompson is participating in Dry July, in which people give up drinking for the whole of July to raise funds for a cancer service. She has chosen to donate funds raised to the Cancer Council.
The 24-year-old started doing Dry July after she was moved by her cousin Chris and his fight with cancer. Chris died earlier this month.
Ms Thompson did Dry July in 2013 with a friend and raised about $1300. This year, she and a team of eight others have already raised more than $2000.
“I am very determined to do what I can for other families,” she said.
And it is not as if giving up alcohol for a whole month is going to be easy for Ms Thompson and her group of friends.
“I do really enjoy my wine,” she said.
“We are all keen for a drink so it is not an easy task for us.”
She said having a cousin who had cancer really opened her eyes about the disease.
“It’s basically like a living nightmare,” she said. “Certain things become insignificant.
“Certain problems just do not really matter and it changes the way you view the world in a big way.”
