Numerous objections to Cloud 9

MLA AND RESIDENTS DON’T WANT SMOKE SHOP TO OPEN IN NEIGHBOURHOOD

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - News - Susanne Reilly

EAST VICTORIA PARK VICTORIA Park MLA Ben Wyatt has raised concerns about an East Victoria smoke shop.

Cloud 9 Victoria Park opened on Etwell Street on July 3.

“I have some very serious concerns about the opening of this Cloud 9 Store,” Mr Wyatt said.

“While the implements being sold are not in of themselves illegal, it is very clear that the prod- ucts being sold can be used to consume illegal drugs. Some of the other products being sold at Cloud 9 stores, such as detox kits and synthetic urine, also suggest that customers are using illicit substances.

“This is a largely residential area, with three primary schools within easy walking distance.

“I have had several residents contact me with concerns about the opening of such a store in the area.”

He called on the Government to develop a comprehensive state planning policy to allow local governments to exercise appropriate decision-making around whether these sorts of stores can open in residential areas. Under current regulations, the Town of Victoria Park cannot prevent the store as it complies with the Commercial Zoning.

A representative for Cloud 9 Victoria Park says the store does not supply drugs or have anything to do with drugs.

“We are a tobacco accessories store. Everything we sell is for use with tobacco. If any customer mentions any different we can’t sell our products to them,” the representative said.

Town chief executive Anthony Vuleta said the Town had received feedback from several concerned residents opposed to the Cloud 9 opening.
