Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Opinion -

NEWER residents to South Perth may be surprised that there were once Chinese market gardens along the South Perth foreshore in the area now known as Sir James Mitchell Park.

The City of South Perth Historical Society has lovingly pieced together images for an exhibition from more than 80 years ago when Chinese gardeners supplied the locals with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Prominent local historian Kaylene Poon will speak on the topic of Early Chinese People in Western Australia at South Perth Bowling Club on Sunday July 19 at 2pm.

Entry is by gold coin donation with afternoon tea provided. RSVP to Audrey Sue on 9367 8793 or email ktrent@bigpond.net.au.
