Federal heavyweights pay local visit

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Opinion -

SOUTH PERTH FEDERAL Minister for Social Services Scott Morrison attended a social services forum at the City of Belmont on July 16.

Issues for discussion included social security payments, the new childcare package, aged care, mental health issues and social and economic opportunities for people with disabilities.

Attendees included representatives from the cities of Belmont, Canning, Victoria Park and South Perth, and Belmont MLA Glenys Godfrey.

Mr Morrison thanked Member for Swan Steve Irons for the opportunity to hear first-hand from Swan stakeholders and community representatives.

“It was great to meet locals and discuss these important issues,” he said.

“The federal government supports people most in need of assistance.”

On the same night, East Metropolitan MLC Samantha Rowe and Labor Senator Sue Lines welcomed Federal opposition trea- sury spokesman Chris Bowen, who outlined Labor’s budget concerns and impacts on local households.

“It was fantastic to have Chris Bowen in Belmont to hear about federal budget concerns directly from local people,” Ms Rowe said.

“My office has been inundated with complaints from con- stituents struggling to balance their household budgets in the face of increasing costs of living.”

Ms Lines said she welcomed the opportunity to host these town hall forums.

“It’s a great opportunity to be able to speak to people one on one and hear what they think,” she said.”
