EFFORTS TO SWAP WHEEL FALL FLAT

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Opinion -

I AM going to use this editorial to have a few stern words to the parents of Gen Ys and the culture that has encouraged us to mollycoddle them to the point where they have to call the RAC to change a flat tyre. Last week, a young reporter rang me to say he would be late to an interview because his car had broken down. It transpired that he had a flat tyre and had called the RAC. Fortunately, he had a laptop to work on while he waited. When I quizzed the other young reporters in the newsroom, only one of the five knew how to change a wheel. And she had learnt at school. I have to own up, I tried to show my 21-year-old son how to put the spare wheel on his car a few months ago. He whinged so much, I finished the job myself. I think our efforts to be the perfect parents have backfired.
