Eclipse shines

ATHLETES ARE OVER THE MOON

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Sport -

VICTORIA Park based fitness club Eclipse Fitness is sending several athletes to represent Australia at the World Duathlon Championships in Adelaide this weekend.

Among the talented competitors are Matt Smith, Kurt Wesley, Dale Wesley and Lachie Macdougall, as well as trainer Stuart Durham.

Durham will compete in the 40-44 age group but said he was more focused on supporting his athletes.

“I always feel some pressure to perform at events but at the end of the day, my coaching is my priority,” Durham said. “If my athletes perform well, then I am happy; it’s great to be able to travel and race with the athletes I coach.”

In the lead-up to the competition this weekend, the athletes have undergone intensive training of up to 20 hours a week, to bring them to the high performance level.

“These guys are competing at a very high level and have made heaps of sacrifices; it gets pretty cut-throat,” he said.

“I have been coaching Kurt since he was eight-years-old, so it’s great to see all his hard work paying off.”

In the duathlon, athletes complete a run between 5km and 10km, a bike ride between 20km and 40km and end with another run between 5km and 10km, depending on age and level.
