ATHLETES from around the world will make their way to Perth in 12 months to compete in the 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships would be one of the biggest events Western Australia would see next year in terms of visitor numbers and economic impact.

“We’re expecting thousands of people from around 80 countries to compete in the Perth 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships which get under way in exactly one year from today,” he said.

He said WA won the right to host the event in 2011 thanks to a collaborative effort between Tourism WA, Australian Masters Athletics, Masters Athletics Western Australia, Athletics Western Australia, Athletics Australia, the Department of Sport and Recreation and VenuesWest.

The Championships will be held from October 26 to November 6, 2016 and the opening ceremony will be held at Elizabeth Quay.
