Out of the box idea

ACTIV employees from Palmyra and East Victoria Park recently celebrated a milestone after unpacking two million boxes for Australian retailer Kmart.

The partnership began in 2010 and has evolved from a small contract at the former Activ O’Connor workplace to a weekly contract which, on any given day, provides employment to more than 40 people with a disability.

Employees from Activ’s Palmyra and East Victoria Park workplace regularly travel to Kmart’s distribution centre in Canning Vale, where they spend the day unpacking clothing deliveries. The deliveries are then transported to Kmart stores across the State.

East Victoria Park industrial services manager Bill Chrystal said the partnership had been a great opportunity for Activ’s employees.

“The guys love heading into Kmart and getting the chance to be a part of an interactive, engaging workplace,” he said.

“They are always made to feel welcome by the Kmart team and really enjoy getting to work with such a large organisation.”

For Kmart, the partnership has delivered a rise in productivity.

“The first year we partnered with Activ, we saw a 15 per cent increase in our productivity, which was outstanding,” distribution manager Michael Moulin said.

“The guys play a really important role in getting our stock ready and on the floor.

“It’s a great relationship and one that we really value.”

Activ employees Daniel Abreu, Chris Holt, Alicia Boaden, Todd Fogarty and Rebecca Abrahams help unpack boxes for retailer Kmart.
