Historic feat for joint athletes of the year
CYCLIST Melissa Hoskins and netballer Caitlin Bassett were joint winners of the 2015 WA Institute of Sport Athlete of the Year award.
Hoskins, who helped Australia to gold at the 2015 UCI Track World Championships in France, accepted the award at the WAIS Annual Dinner held last month.
Australian Diamonds player Caitlin Bassett accepted her prize via video link because she was in Christchurch for the Constellation Cup Test series against the Silver Ferns.
The pair are the first female cyclist and netballer to win the award, first presented in 1985.
Hoskins said she was shocked to win the prize given she was in a team sport.
Wheelchair basketballer Brad Ness received the Personal Excellence Award, swimmer Tamsyn Cook was named Junior Athlete of the Year and golfer Minjee Lee got the Herb Elliot Medal.
Swimming was named Program of the Year and soccer and cricket legends Stan Lazaridis and Adam Gilchrist were inducted into the WA Hall of Champions.
Sharon Jarvis (paralympic equestrian), Lindsay Peacon (athlete) and Jamie Roberts (kayaker) received Wally Foreman Foundation scholarships.
Melissa Hoskins was joint winner of the Athlete of the Year.
