Zoo emus given time to keep their cool

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - News -

THE resident emus at the Perth Zoo had their feathers ruffled with a cooling shower last week as part of the zoo’s enrichment program to beat the heat.

The program ensures no two days are the same for the animals, and with the weather starting to sizzle, new activities have been introduced to keep them in top shape in all climates.

Some cooling activities, including the food ice blocks enjoyed by the primates, can be used for pets at home.

But while the animals of Perth Zoo are lucky to have constant help from their keepers, pets might not have that luxury.

In cases of extreme heat, the zoo encourages people to provide plenty of access to shade and water during the day for their pets.
