Coucnil rejects laneway plan

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - News -

THE Town of Victoria Park has refused to dispose of a right of way to car dealer John Hughes.

In August, lawyers representing the car dealership requested the council close the laneway and dispose of it to the company.

The laneway runs between Teddington and Twickenham roads.

All of the units adjoining the laneway are owned by John Hughes but councillors rejected the report supporting the request at last week’s council meeting as some councillors said he might not own them forever.

Before the report was discussed, Mayor Trevor Vaughan left the room because John Hugh- es donated to his mayoral election campaign.

Councillor Vince Maxwell said the report didn’t “feel right” and questioned why the mayor put himself in that position.

Deputy Mayor Brian Oliver asked him to retract comments made about the mayor but he refused and kept talking.

“I see no reason to take away the right from everyone just for one,” he said.

“They are individual blocks … they might not always belong to one person.”

Councillor Vicki Potter said the area could be used for future high-rises and the laneway could prove useful.
