The definition of domestic violence does not restrict itself to physical violence. It can involve sexual assault, psychological, social and elder abuse including intimidation, threats, emotional blackmail, forced isolation and limiting access to finances. A commitment from every member of the community, including health professionals, social workers, counsellors, teachers and police is needed to identify and recognise signs of possible family and domestic violence. Last year, there were 106 cases of family and domestic violence referred from the Armadale Health Service Emergency Department to the health service's social workers.
