Eighty years of refuge

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - News -

MERCY Place Lathlain and the Dogs’ Refuge Home have come together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the refuge home.

Tales from our Home is a special 80th anniversary presentation compiled by the refuge and it took seniors on a trip down memory lane as refuge volunteers took them through the shelter’s history.

Mercy Health’s service manager Lorraine Wallis said residents could remember adopting a dog from the shelter last century.

Dogs’ Refuge Home president Karen Rhodes said she welcomed the opportunity to talk to the residents about the refuge’s work in helping Perth’s abandoned dogs.

“Our incredible volunteers have worked hard to uncover the refuge’s history in our 80th anniversary year; we have been heartened to learn how extensively our home has been woven into the fabric of the WA community since the 1930s,” she said.

“It will be wonderful to hear from residents who have firsthand experience of adopting.”

The refuge has rescued and rehomed about 50,000 dogs.
