Great Scott well on track

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Sport -

AFTER winning a silver medal at the World Athletic Championship in Qatar this year, Brad Scott is hungry as ever to get to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 summer Paralympics.

The Victoria Park mortgage broker took out silver for the 1500m race but said he considered that a trial run for his main effort to represent the nation at the Paralympics next year.

The 27-year-old took up running in 2006, won silver in the men’s 800m in Beijing in 2008 followed by a silver and bronze win at London in 2012.

Scott, who was born with cerebral palsy, has learnt to balance his daily athletics-training schedule while working as a mortgage broker.

He said he entered broking when he realised he would need a career beyond running.

“There are a lot of similarities between mortgage broking and competing in athletics,” he said.

“They’re similar in that you get back exactly what you put in.

“You can really only succeed if you have built a solid foundation in your training and have a really good support team behind you.”

Scott said his career in broking allowed him to be flexible enough to train hard but would also give him a life after sport.

I’m fortunate to work with two great brokers and have learnt a lot over the past year,” Scott said.

“It’s rewarding to meet so many great people and having the opportunity to help them to also achieve their dreams, like I have been doing through athletics.”
