Schools take the plunge together at swim meet

WITH the hot weather setting in, the pool is the place to be, according to swimmers from the Aquinas Redbacks Swim Club.

The club played host to swimmers from Iona Presentation College this month to test skills and times against one of the top all-girls school swim teams.

Aquinas College and Iona students participated in training and time trials with Aquinas Redbacks’ head coach and former Olympic silver medallist Antony Matkovich and Iona’s head coach Suzette Felton.

“Swimming is one of the few sports where girls and boys can train together,” Mr Matkovich said.

While it was only the second time Iona students had trained with Aquinas at the College’s 50m heated pool, Mr Matkovich said he would like to see it become a regular training opportunity.

“Iona has a strong swimming culture and some very good swimmers,” he said. “As a new club, Aquinas Redbacks are keen to expand our membership and welcome more girls.”

He said another meet with Iona was scheduled for early 2016.

Iona Presentation College students Ella Cook and Jess Sherlock at the Aquinas Redbacks Swim Club meet with Aquinas College’s Matthew Joubert and Anthony Hobbs.
