Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION -

ON behalf of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Perth community for its overwhelming response to our call for more blood donors over the festive season.

In the three days leading into New Year’s Eve, more than 1500 generous people, many of whom had never donated blood before, called in to make an appointment to roll up their sleeves.

Every donation makes a difference to not only the three lives you have helped save, but also the lives of their families and friends who were able to enjoy another Christmas with their loved one.

I also extend a huge thanks to our regular donors; the one in 30 people who have made donating blood a way of life.

These wonderful donors are always there, even when we ask for an hour of their time on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day.

Cancer patients, the parents of premature babies and the families of those who suffered a trauma over the festive season will be forever grateful for the gift of life these wonderful blood donors have given them.

Blood is a precious and valuable resource and patient demand for blood is continuous.

With one in three people expected to need blood in their lifetime, the need for blood never takes a break and during public holidays more donors are always needed.

The forthcoming Australia Day public holiday is no exception.

I often hear people say they would like to donate but just have not got around to it. Therefore, why not make it your new year’s resolution to save three lives in 2016?

It will cost you nothing but an hour of your time and the benefits will last a lifetime. MARY HAUGHTON, WA donor services manager, Australian Red Cross Blood Service.
