Lion-hearted effort from clubs in the country
LIONS clubs across the country are banding together to help those affected by the South-West bushfires begin piecing their lives back together.
Allan Cooper, District Governor of the 67 WA clubs south of the Swan River, said donations had streamed in in the wake of the raging inferno that destroyed 180 homes and left two people dead.
“All the clubs in WA have been asked to consider making financial donations through the Australian Lions Foundation, which has already provided $50,000 to the appeal,” he said.
“Since then donations from clubs all over the country have been coming through steadily – one club from NSW has donated $10,000, but most are in the vicinity of $500-$1000.”
The Booragoon Lions Club, of which Mr Cooper is a member, held a sausage sizzle at Bunnings earlier this month, with all proceeds donated to the appeal.
Mr Cooper said it appeared the immediate needs of those affected by the fires were being taken care of and that the Lions Club donations would likely be used for longer-term recovery efforts.
