BERNIE ENJOYS AUSTRALIA DAY
THERE will be plenty of public transport options this Australia Day.
Transperth has planned extra buses and trains to get revellers to and from Australia Day events later this month.
Transperth spokesman David Hynes said the Australia Day celebration was traditionally the busiest single day on the Transperth calendar and urged passengers to plan their journeys.
“We’ve spent months planning additional train and bus services, and enlisting extra transit officers and customer service staff to help our passengers make the most of their Australia Day festivities,” he said.
Transperth railcar driver Bernie Tanteckchi will be one of the drivers helping people get home safely on Australia Day.
The Ferndale resident immigrated to Australia with his wife and two children a decade ago from the Philippines.
“It was a childhood dream to come to Australia; I’ve always been attracted to the Western world,” he said.
“I like working on Australia Day because you see families enjoying themselves and loving just being here in Australia.
“It makes me realise how blessed I am to have been accepted here; not everyone has a chance to live their dream in Australia, it’s a day for everyone to really ponder and appreciate being here.”
Passengers can plan ahead for Australia Day using Transperth’s online journey planner, mobile app or by calling 13 62 13.
Mr Hynes urged people to be patient after the fireworks show.
“While a steady stream of people arrive at the foreshore throughout the day, when the fireworks are finished, there’s a rush to get home as soon as possible,” he said.
“To make it as quick and easy as possible for everyone, we direct Joondalup Line passengers to Perth Underground, Mandurah Line passengers to Esplanade station, and Midland, Armadale/Thornlie and Fremantle passengers to Perth station.”
Northbound Joondalup line trains will not stop at Esplanade and southbound Mandurah line trains will not stop at Perth Underground. Esplanade Station: Mandurah Line passengers only. Perth Underground: Joondalup Line passengers only. Enter from Murray Street Mall (west end). Perth Station: Armadale, Thornlie, Fremantle and Midland line passengers only. Armadale Line: Platform 5. Enter from Wellington Street main entrance. Thornlie Line: Platform 4. Enter from the eastern concourse or Wellington Street main entrance.
