Grace shows grit to go all the way

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - SPORT -

YOUNG South Perth rugby union star Grace McFillen is gunning to play in the new rugby union sevens competition starting in April.

Grace (11) has been an outstanding success on the field, last year leading the South Perth rugby league team to a premiership in the under-11 grade WA competition.

She’s represented both WA and Australia in the game, having competed in Singapore in the other rugby code, rugby league.

The win in Singapore capped a great season for Grace after she was part of the Neddies under-11s team that won RugbyWA’s Road to Rio rugby sevens tournament.

Since returning to Perth, Grace has been in training for the Neddies girls team for the new sevens competition.

Grace’s Neddies under11s rugby union coach Mark Drummond said Grace had a big future in the game, which was rapidly expanding.

“Rugby sevens is now an Olympic sport for girls and that’s a great incentive for talented young players like Grace,” he said.

“She certainly has the eye of the tiger and she showed on the international stage in Singapore that the bigger the occasion the more she steps up.”
