DO RESEARCH TO BEAT SCAMMERS

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION -

OUR household has been the target of scammers in the past couple of weeks. They have left threatening messages on the answering service three times, telling us we were being sued by the tax department and local police were ready to arrest us if we did not return their call immediately. The caller gave a name of ‘Jason Mathews’ and said he was from Melbourne. He had a strong accent. He also left a mobile number for us to call. My wife wanted to call and give Mr Mathews a bit of his own medicine – and believe me, she can be pretty threatening – but I did not want to waste the time or money to respond. It made me angry, but also worried for more vulnerable people, who could be manipulated by this nasty ruse. If you get any phone calls that cause concern, ring the Department of Commerce or check the website www.scamnet.wa.gov.au before you take any action.
