Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - WHAT'S ON -

SECURING a spot with the Perth International Arts Festival’s Young Creatives program is on par with getting a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, says South Perth resident Katie McAllister.

Hopeful writer McAllister (18) is one of just six arts enthusiasts accepted into the competitive program, joining other aspiring performers, technicians, writers, filmmakers and visual artists.

During PIAF, the program will help the Young Creatives forge a career in the arts by providing first-hand experience and access to some of the best professionals in the industry.

McAllister said she was deeply grateful for the endless opportunities the program would provide.

“It will let you ask questions that are pointed and direct to people who have specific and useful answers, or who’ve been in a similar situation and can share advice on how to take the next step,” she said.

“We will have the beautiful opportunity to speak to artists working in our chosen field, attend shows and meet the incredible team behind the scenes that bring PIAF to life.”

While McAllister studies economics at UWA, she said her other dream of becoming a writer was not something she chose.

“At the risk of sounding a bit dramatic, I don’t think you want to be a writer, you kind of need to be one or just find you are one,” she said.

“I guess I want to just be a good writer, one that lets you think about things from a different perspective.

“There are a lot of untold stories in our recent history that have valuable lessons. I would love to target adults and teenagers but I’m reluctant to put readers into categories.”

Participants in the Young Creative program will blog about their experiences, and McAllister said she was looking forward to being able to dedicate some time to both writing and learning.

McAllister will attend the Perth Writers Festival talks and workshops, go behind the scenes to meet best-selling author Lisa Genova and shadow the team to learn about the publishing industry.
