Hundreds to take to open water

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - SPORT -

HUNDREDS of swimmers will be taking to the beach for the annual Leighton Swim Thru this Saturday.

Run by the Fremantle Surf Lifesaving Club, participants can choose to hit the water for either a 1600m or more challenging 3200m swim.

Leighton Swim Thru co-ordinator Colin Duffield said they hoped to use the event to promote open water swimming.

“The competitors seem to enjoy the fun nature of the event with a friendly atmosphere and relatively calm waters,” he said.

“These events help profile our Surf Life Saving movement and demonstrate to the public, State and local government that we have the capability to manage big events and provide water safety to a very high level.”
