Students safe after fire evacuation
RESIDENTS in Kensington were warned to prepare to fight or flee the bushfire spreading throughout the area last week.
Staff and students were evacuated from Kensington Secondary School after the fire broke out about 1.30pm last Monday.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) confirmed 45 students and 35 staff had been safely removed from the area.
DFES issued an alert for residents to be vigilant and stay away from potential dangers.
“There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching the area and conditions are changing,” the alert said.
“You need to leave or get ready to actively defend.”
A bushfire Watch and Act was issued for people near the intersection of Baron-Hay Court and George Street.
Residents in surrounding areas of Kensington, Victoria Park, Como and in the City of South Perth and Town of Victoria Park had been warned to monitor surroundings despite not being in immediate danger.
