Stu­dents safe af­ter fire evac­u­a­tion

RES­I­DENTS in Kens­ing­ton were warned to pre­pare to fight or flee the bush­fire spread­ing through­out the area last week.

Staff and stu­dents were evac­u­ated from Kens­ing­ton Sec­ondary School af­ter the fire broke out about 1.30pm last Mon­day.

The Depart­ment of Fire and Emer­gency Ser­vices (DFES) con­firmed 45 stu­dents and 35 staff had been safely re­moved from the area.

DFES is­sued an alert for res­i­dents to be vig­i­lant and stay away from po­ten­tial dan­gers.

“There is a pos­si­ble threat to lives and homes as a fire is ap­proach­ing the area and con­di­tions are chang­ing,” the alert said.

“You need to leave or get ready to ac­tively de­fend.”

A bush­fire Watch and Act was is­sued for peo­ple near the in­ter­sec­tion of Baron-Hay Court and Ge­orge Street.

Res­i­dents in sur­round­ing ar­eas of Kens­ing­ton, Vic­to­ria Park, Como and in the City of South Perth and Town of Vic­to­ria Park had been warned to mon­i­tor sur­round­ings de­spite not be­ing in im­me­di­ate dan­ger.
