HEALTH experts have warned residents to remain vigilant around friends and family as prescription drug abuse grows in Australia. WA drug and alcohol counselling and support service provider Holyoake chief executive Angie Paskevicius said an increasing number of people were approaching the Victoria Park-based provider for guidance on the issue. “We are concerned about the growing number of people in the community misusing prescription drugs and we’re worried because the loved ones of these people don’t often think there’s any help,” she said. “We are keen for people to realise there is help out there.” Ms Paskevicius said research suggested painkillers were the most commonly misused pharmaceutical drug. “This can be a harder type of addiction to detect and can therefore be a hidden problem, so raising awareness of this is definitely part of the solution,” she said. “But the impact of misusing prescription drugs can be just as traumatic on loved ones as the impact of misusing illicit drugs so getting help is a must.”
