Nalder digging hole for himself: McGowan

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION -

OPPOSITION Leader Mark McGowan has criticised Transport Minister Dean Nalder’s latest “thought bubble” to create road tunnels in a bid to reduce congestion on Perth roads.

Mr Nalder told The West Australian last week roads such as Orrong Road and Can- ning Highway could be suited to tunnelling instead of widening – therefore avoiding costly land acquisitions.

He said the falling price of tunnelling made the idea worth considering and denied it would replace public transport plans.

But Mr McGowan said the Transport Minister was “digging a hole” for himself.

“This is yet another thought bubble from the Government who don’t have a plan for transport,” he said.

“It is the latest in a series of uncosted, unfunded ideas and he has already stated it won’t happen in his lifetime.”
