Backyard car dealer fined
AN unlicensed motor vehicle dealer was fined $7500 and ordered to pay costs of about $1000 after pleading guilty at the Perth Magistrates Court last month.
Cloverdale resident Glyn David Robinson purchased 42 vehicles and sold 21 of them between March 2014 and September 2015 without a licence.
Mr Robinson was in breach of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act and had sold the vehicles through 38 advertisements online on Gumtree.
Acting commissioner for consumer protection David Hillyard said backyard car dealing was a threat to consumers.
“Selling more than four vehicles in a year is generally regarded as operating a business, rather than simply disposing of our own vehicles or taking part in a hobby,” Mr Hillyard said.
“Unlicensed dealers do not offer warranties for their vehicles which put consumers at great risk.
“The other major concern is that the vehicles being sold could be sub-standard in quality and pose a safety risk in the event of mechanical failure while on the road.”
