Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION -

THE loss of Carnaby's black cockatoos should be a warning to all of us like the canary in the coalmine.

Unfettered growth in Perth to 3.5 million is just unsustainable.

When will a politician finally stand up and tell the truth that an economy built on the growth mantra comes at an unacceptable environmental and social cost?

Did anyone actually ask Perth citizens if they want to live in a city of 3.5 million?

Congestion, lack of water and power are all issues we can do without. Australia does not need to grow through population increase.

Asian and Indian growth will take care of any growth required.

It is time to look seriously at decentralisation with a new city in the Kimberley and fast rail to our SouthWest with far more liveable cities at Bunbury, Busselton and Albany. COLIN HUGHES, Greenmount.
