Luke primed for big stage

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - SPORT -

TRAINING six days a week, South Perth resident Luke Burrows (15) is in peak physical fitness ahead of a national competition.

The Wesley College Year 10 student has secured a place as the WA representative for the 1500m and 3km triathlons at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships.

“I’m looking forward to championships, it’s always exciting to race up against the best in the country,” he said.

“On the day there’s always a little bit of nerves, but once I’m off and running that all goes away.”

While he’s been running since he was eight years old, falling in love with cross-country, Luke only took up triathlons in mid 2015.

He trained at Victoria Park based triathlon club Eclipse Fitness under coach Stuart Durham, completing up to 18 hours a week.

“There’s endurance running, skill work, plyometrics and then racing as well,” Luke said.

“Eight hours a week of my training is running.”

Luke will compete in the Australian Junior Athletics Championships held in Perth this week.

“I think when I finish school I’d like to continue triathlons and endurance running, maybe one day to represent Australia at the world youth games,” Luke said.

“I’d also like to go to UWA and study sports science or law.”
