Markets are in fashion
THE role of in-house fashion stylist at the Angelo Street Marketplace is a perfect fit for local style buff Mikey Walton.
Mr Walton is director of personal styling business Stylespiration and has joined forces with the City of South Perth to bring fashion to the popular annual market for the first time.
Amid styling runway shows throughout the day, Mr Walton said he was also looking forward to working with a group of local fashion designer graduates from Polytechnic West, Bentley.
He said he hoped the markets could help bring their fresh brands to the public eye.
“I’ve selected six students who graduated last year to not only showcase their collections, but have a stall to sell pieces to the public,” he said.
“It gives students a great opportunity to have their collection viewed and also helps their exposure as a talented up and coming designer.”
“I’ve lived in South Perth for seven years now, and it really is a secret hub of stylish locals who support many great boutiques in Angelo Street,” Mr Walton said.
“Any of the students showcasing at the markets may eventually also call Angelo Street home for their first store one day.”
Remi Lane (19), of Casuarina, is one of the selected graduates gearing up to reveal her collection at the market.
She has an Advanced Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Technology.
“I learnt a lot and finished with a wide knowledge of the fashion industry, and I won the Industry Judging Range of the Year Award,” she said.
“I’m currently studying my Associates Degree of Fashion Business and soon I’ll be starting my own label.
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do since grade 5 when I found out it was possible to make a job out of fashion.”
In the lead-up to the markets, Ms Lane said she was excited to build her own brand.
“I’ll be releasing my label Remi Lane at the end of the year. I pride myself on quality not quantity so there will be some very special pieces to come. This label is something I’ve wanted to do since grade 5 when I found out it was possible to make a job out of fashion,” she said.
