Bicycle boulevard for Belmont cyclists

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - NEWS -

ABOUT $1.7 million will be spent turning Surrey Road into a bicycle boulevard and upgrading the Great Eastern Highway underpass for cyclists.

City of Belmont’s public submissions period for the Department of Transport-funded project finished last month and the project is expected to return to council soon.

Belmont chief executive Stuart Cole said detailed design work on the project would start as soon as the funding agreement with the State Government was signed and construction was expected to start in May.

The design phase will deal with issues raised during public consultation.

“The main issues raised by the residents are based around parking and the location of the proposed infrastructure treatments,” he said.

Infrastructure treatments refer to the road changes used to slow traffic to a maximum speed of 30km/h using methods like landscaping, speed bumps and slow points.

Feedback regarding the bicycle boulevard has been largely positive, with many residents saying slower traffic would be a welcome change.

Residents at the Great Eastern Highway end of Surrey Street hold concerns about emerging parking problems for city commuters using their verges as free carparks due to their proximity to a major bus stop.

“The City of Belmont will undertake a parking strategy for the whole corridor and surrounding streets,” Mr Cole said.

“This will be done in parallel with the detailed design process and will be part of the implementation of the project.”

City of Belmont has a Local Bike Plan (2013-2018) that outlines missing links and other potential infrastructure projects to help connect the cycle network.

But due to rapid growth and public infrastructure investment since the plan’s release, the City is working on a more comprehensive strategic transport plan called Belmont on the Move.
