Art is best medicine
LOCAL doctor Pradeep Jayasuriya prescribes art to his patients.
The Cloverdalebased general practitioner’s philosophy is that health is not just about medicine, and that art and creativity enrich people’s lives and improve health in a tangible way
His surgery, Belgravia Medical Centre, has been turned into a gallery of patients’ artworks and this month he opened his fourth exhibition.
While most surgeries have a waiting room, Dr Jayasuriya has the Belgravia Arts Community Gallery.
The gallery’s latest exhibition, which Dr Jayasuriya dubs ‘capturing the mo- ment’ has artists celebrating the here and now through their artwork.
Dr Jayasuriya said medical practices like his had a task to encourage and facilitate creative outlets to im- prove lives.
“We created a gallery as a way of celebrating our patients’ talents in a caring environment,” he said.
“It’s had a great response on a wider
enrich level, because naturally enough, the artists are known to many of their fellow patients; in many cases it is only one or two degrees of separation between the artist and viewer.”
