NOT CHILD’S PLAY

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - LOCAL FOCUS -

ECU PhD candidate DeeDee Noon is on a mission to learn about our most cherished toys and is looking for participants of all ages to be photographed and share their story for her research.

Following her first class honours look into ‘pinkification’, photographing Perth women and their relationship to all things pink, Noon is continuing a similar methodology for her PhD, beginning the practical aspect of running a photo booth at Central Institute Gallery in Perth until March 24.

“My photographic portrait research aims to explore the emotions that underpin person-to-toy transactions,” Noon said.

“The photo booth will help get exposure, so people can be photographed and possibly develop into a case study.

“But first they need to email me, ideally with a toy selfie or photo of them with their toy as a kid.

“I’ll reply with a series of questions about the toy, so I have something to analyse when it comes to the written part, then we’ll set up a portrait session.”

Noon said photos would be taken in the spirit of co-creation with a playful approach and subjects would be able to view them.

“I’m not out to ridicule people or anything like that, it’s just this lovely space to take photos of these things we love that resonate back in some way,” she said.

“I’m not after collectors, I will certainly engage with them, but they will have to narrow it down to one toy.

“For me, the sitter is in charge of defining what a toy is for them and it’s the relationship the person has with that object that I am interested in, because people use toys for identity, interests and aspirations.

“They are so proud to share this and that for me is the delightful moment.”

One of Noon’s first photography sessions (pictured) was with Tania Visosevic and the ‘coming out’ of her big blue bear, Sideshow Ted.
