Ice cream a bit fishy
MOVE over vanilla, chocolate and strawberry; there is a unique ice cream craze in Fremantle while the weather is still hot.
Tucked away on the water of the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is the Kailis Fish Market Cafe, home to some of the best fish and chips in Fremantle.
While many would expect fish and chips to come on a plate and require the use of a knife and fork, owner George Kailis has taken the quintessential Freo dish and turned it into an ice cream flavour, complete with fish batter sprinkled on top.
Diner Geraldine Roxburgh, who taste tested the ice cream with her friends Sheila Rowley and Muriel Sutton, said she never would have imagined fish and chip flavoured ice cream being a thing.
“Having tasted it, it’s actually very nice,” she said. “The batter gives it a great crunch. “I think people might be unsure about it until they try it, but I would definitely recommend it.”
According to staff, it is a flavour that is growing into a local favourite among visitors to the cafe.
