POWER OF THREE DIVERSITY A KEY THEME

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - LIFESTYLE -

EVERY artist starts with an empty palette, where their artistic individuality is reflected in colour selection, differing techniques and imagination.

Local artists Mia Laing, Jan Brown and Alicia Gorey will celebrate their diversity in joint exhibition Three Palettes at Moore’s Building Contemporary Art Gallery from April 1 to 17.

Laing said her interest in photography inspired her realistic figurative work, which was influenced by the sundrenched beauty of the WA lifestyle.

“Jan’s artistic style is impressionist works of ballet and dance, often completed with a palette knife and impasto effects,” Laing said.

“Alicia, a strong and competent award-winning portrait artist, has chosen to paint the ‘Faces of Fremantle’ as her theme.”

The trio met at The Claremont School of Art and when it closed three years ago, realised they were at a crossroad in their painting journey.

It was decided a combined exhibition was the perfect step and a natural progression.

“We selected The Moore’s Building Contemporary Art Gallery for its accessibility to emerging artists,” Laing said.

“It has an 18-month waiting list for exhibitions, so it was the right amount of time for each of us to collate a strong body of work.”

Laing said planning Three Palettes had highlighted the shortage of community-based exhibition venues open to professional and emerging artists, a problem that will be alleviated when The Goods Shed, run by independent, not-for-profit organisation FORM, opens in Claremont later this year.

“The Goods Shed is currently undergoing a historic transformation and will be an art gallery, artist-in-residence studio, workplace, cafe and garden,” Laing said.

“It will bring a much-needed creative energy and buzz back to Claremont and its surrounding community, which has been lost since the closure of The Claremont School of Arts in 2013.

Three Palettes will officially open at 6pm on Friday, April 1, with the gallery open 10am to 4pm daily.
