ONE of the school’s six bands and ensembles, Melville Senior High School’s Swing Band is made up of 14 students from the school’s Music in Focus program.

The band plays at numerous events, including local primary schools where they entertain and encourage students to take up an instrument through the Instrumental Music School Services.

Demonstrating that music and academic ability are strongly linked, nine of the band are in the school’s Gifted and Talented Selective Academic Program.

Year 11 student James Calvert plays saxophone and is also studying aviation with a solo pilot accreditation and is soon to have his pilot’s license.

Twins Morgan and Ashley Ure play trumpets and will be representing Australia in the RoboCup Junior International competition in June. They won the Australian Championships last year, coding their robots to dance to a theme.
