CLAS­SIC ve­hi­cles and old NSW black and white num­ber plates both achieved record prices at Shan­nons Syd­ney Au­tumn Clas­sic Auc­tion on March 14, with the top seller be­ing an im­mac­u­late 1957 Porsche 356A Speed­ster that fetched a stun­ning $411,000.

It was an Aus­tralian auc­tion record for a Speed­ster. And 28 old num­ber plates col­lec­tively ac­counted for $2.2 mil­lion.

The auc­tion at­tracted in­ter­na­tional in­ter­est, but all the sig­nif­i­cant ve­hi­cles went to lo­cal en­thu­si­asts.

Among the stand­out sales was a 1967 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 litre Se­ries I Coupe which sold lo­cally above es­ti­mate for $134,000 while a 1969 left-hand­drive Ford Torino Tal­ladega 428 Coupe and a 1969 Ford Mus­tang 428 Su­per Co­bra Jet Mach 1 Fast­back each re­alised $112,000.

A 1965

Mercedes-Benz 230SL ' Pagoda Roof' con­vert­ible sold for $87,000, and among the Vin­tage and Vet­eran ve­hi­cles a 1903 Oldsmo­bile Model R Curved Dash Run­about went for $71,000, a 1913 Ford Model T ' Tur­tle Deck' Run­about for $27,000 and a 1927 Ford Model T Speed­ster make $15,000.

Other no­table re­sults were the $58,000 paid for a re­stored 1950 Ri­ley RMD Drop­head Coupe and $60,500 for a 1970 Bol­wellNa­gari 302ci V8 coupe.

The num­ber plates re­main a head­scratcher. NSW '239' and '254' sold for $140,000 each, while four other 3-digit plates brought $100,000 or more.

This rare and sought-af­ter 1969 Ford Torino Tal­ladega 428 Coupe sold for $112,000.

This NSW num­ber plate of yes­ter­year fetched an eye­wa­ter­ing $140,000.
