PORSCHE TOPS SALE
CLASSIC vehicles and old NSW black and white number plates both achieved record prices at Shannons Sydney Autumn Classic Auction on March 14, with the top seller being an immaculate 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster that fetched a stunning $411,000.
It was an Australian auction record for a Speedster. And 28 old number plates collectively accounted for $2.2 million.
The auction attracted international interest, but all the significant vehicles went to local enthusiasts.
Among the standout sales was a 1967 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 litre Series I Coupe which sold locally above estimate for $134,000 while a 1969 left-handdrive Ford Torino Talladega 428 Coupe and a 1969 Ford Mustang 428 Super Cobra Jet Mach 1 Fastback each realised $112,000.
Mercedes-Benz 230SL ' Pagoda Roof' convertible sold for $87,000, and among the Vintage and Veteran vehicles a 1903 Oldsmobile Model R Curved Dash Runabout went for $71,000, a 1913 Ford Model T ' Turtle Deck' Runabout for $27,000 and a 1927 Ford Model T Speedster make $15,000.
Other notable results were the $58,000 paid for a restored 1950 Riley RMD Drophead Coupe and $60,500 for a 1970 BolwellNagari 302ci V8 coupe.
The number plates remain a headscratcher. NSW '239' and '254' sold for $140,000 each, while four other 3-digit plates brought $100,000 or more.
