Renovation giving church a new life
A BELOVED South Perth church is being refurbished as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations.
St Columba’s Parish has been the subject of a major restoration project.
Monsignor Brian O’Loughlan said there were several renovations happening to the building.
“The foundation for the church was first laid in 1936 and then it opened three months later, so now we’re working on conserving the building,” he said.
“All the tiles have been replaced and now there are workers restoring the tower to fix where some water seepage came through.
“It’s been a major restoration project.”
Mr O’Loughin said he was relieved the cross had been restored in time for Good Friday.
Mr O’Loughlin said the church community had several events to look forward to while renovations continued.
“We’ve invited Archbishop Costello for the feast of St Columbo which is on June 9, so he’ll come to celebrate with us,” he said.
