Ren­o­va­tion giv­ing church a new life

A BELOVED South Perth church is be­ing re­fur­bished as part of its 80th an­niver­sary cel­e­bra­tions.

St Columba’s Par­ish has been the sub­ject of a ma­jor restora­tion project.

Mon­signor Brian O’Lough­lan said there were sev­eral ren­o­va­tions hap­pen­ing to the build­ing.

“The foun­da­tion for the church was first laid in 1936 and then it opened three months later, so now we’re work­ing on con­serv­ing the build­ing,” he said.

“All the tiles have been re­placed and now there are work­ers restor­ing the tower to fix where some wa­ter seep­age came through.

“It’s been a ma­jor restora­tion project.”

Mr O’Loughin said he was re­lieved the cross had been re­stored in time for Good Fri­day.

Mr O’Lough­lin said the church com­mu­nity had sev­eral events to look for­ward to while ren­o­va­tions con­tin­ued.

“We’ve in­vited Arch­bishop Costello for the feast of St Columbo which is on June 9, so he’ll come to cel­e­brate with us,” he said.
