New blood donor facility
BLOOD donors will soon be rolling up their sleeves in a brand-new facility following the relocation of the Cannington Blood Donor Centre.
Later this year, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service will open a new $2.4 million state-ofthe-art centre at 1296 Albany Highway, just five minutes up the road from the existing centre at Westfield Carousel.
Donor services manager Mary Haughton said the existing centre was due for an upgrade.
“Cannington is one of our busiest centres, and due to the steady increase in donors rolling up their sleeves over the past few years, we have outgrown our current premises,” she said.
“At three times the size of our existing centre, our new facility will be more spacious and will boast larger donation and refreshment areas to make our donors’ blood donation experience more enjoyable.
“It will also have the capacity to expand further in the future as demand for blood and blood products changes.
“We will still be located along Albany Highway, but will be in a smaller and slightly quieter complex, making it easier to access for our donors.
“There will also be plenty of dedicated donor parking on our doorstep.”
Important changes to the nation’s blood collection network are helping to create a more stable blood supply for the one in three Australians who will need donated blood or blood products in their lifetime.
The Blood Service collects 25,000 donations a week across Australia.
