Outlet shopping takes off
A DIRECT factory outlet (DFO) centre comprising more than 110 stores is set to be built in the Airport West Retail Park.
Perth Airport announced a 50/50 joint venture with Vicinity Centres last week to develop and jointly own the centre at a site covering 9ha on Dunreath Drive.
The tenancies will comprise specialty outlets, predominantly fashion, food and beverage shops, and parking for 1600 cars.
Vicinity managing director Angus McNaughton said the development was expected to cost about $145 million.
“Subject to planning approvals, construction is expected to start in mid-2017, with completion of the project forecast for 2018,” Mr McNaughton said.
“Vicinity will be the property and development manager of this project and we are delighted to have the opportunity to create a world-class outlet centre on this well-located greenfield site for Perth residents and visitors.
“The asset will be built in a desirable ‘race track’ configuration to facilitate easy access and navigation.”
He said the design would allow for connectivity with, or expansion into, surrounding sites as the airport land was developed over time.
“The site is in a prominent location which will directly benefit from State Government initiatives including the $1 billion Gateway project, the Northlink project and the Forrestfield airport link,” he said.
“Strong arterial access is a key feature of a successful DFO asset and this site’s location will provide easy and convenient access for a broad catchment across Perth’s metropolitan area.”
Vicinity development manger Stephen Beer said during the construction phase more than 250 jobs would be directly created and another 450 jobs indirectly.
Once operational, the DFO would support more than 650 direct jobs and more than 400 indirect jobs.
Mr Beer said the outlet would contribute more than $120 million to the WA economy annually.
Perth Airport executive general manager property Steve Holden said the DFO announcement marked the start of an exciting phase in the evolution of the airport.
“Vicinity has a successful track record in operating DFOs,” he said.
“For our cornerstone retail development we wanted to partner with the best in the brand outlet space.”
