Po­lice re­new fo­cus on crime

A TAR­GETED po­lice op­er­a­tion is be­ing co­or­di­nated from the Belmont po­lice sta­tion.

Po­lice Min­is­ter Liza Har­vey said Op­er­a­tion Re­new, which started in Fe­bru­ary, had been set up by the South East Metropoli­tan Dis­trict lo­cal to fo­cus on bur­glary, theft, stolen mo­tor ve­hi­cles and do­mes­tic vi­o­lence.

“An in­tel­li­gence-led team of of­fi­cers work­ing out of Belmont po­lice sta­tion have tar­geted emerg­ing and cur­rent crime hot spots and prolific of­fend­ers,” Ms Har­vey said.

“To date, Op­er­a­tion Re­new has so far re­sulted in 28 ar­rests and 47 sum­monses for a to­tal of 175 charges.”

The charges in­clude bur­glary, steal­ing, steal­ing mo­tor ve­hi­cles and pos­sess­ing stolen prop­erty.

Ms Har­vey said there had also been 216 ve­hi­cle stops that had re­sulted in a fur­ther 81 charges.

“The best re­sult so far has been nine prolific of­fend­ers be­ing de­tained and re­moved from the community,” she said.
