WAFL stars eager to take on Tasmania
SOUTH FREMANTLE has been rewarded for its stellar start to the season by having seven players picked in the WA squad to tackle Tasmania next month.
Bulldogs captain Ryan Cook is there, together with Blayne Wilson, Marlion Pickett, speedster Tim Kelly, half-back general Ashton Hams, power forward Ben Saunders and Zac Strom.
Perth had three players in the squad, including last year’s Sandover Medallist Aidan Tropiano, who will be joined by Jared Bell and former St Kilda midfielder Clint Jones.
East Fremantle’s Matthew Watson joins Jamie McNamara, Brett Peake, George Hampson, Liam Anthony, Andrew Stephen and Brock O’Brien in the squad.
Coach Darren Harris, who marshalled the 44point win over the SANFL 12 months ago, said he was excited by the talent on hand.
“There are so many WAFL players in great form at the moment and this has allowed us to put together a very strong list,” he said.
“We’ve gone with quite a large squad initially and can still add to that if players show outstanding form over the next few weeks.”
Harris said it was great to have such strong buy-in from players, considering the State game is not compulsory.
“We will end up with those players in our final side who really want to play for their state and deserve to, based on their form,” he said. “That will give us the best opportunity for success against Tassie, who will bring a very strong side.”
The game is on June 11.
