‘Ant’ sol­diers to dual na­tional ti­tles

BEL­MONT teenager An­toine Var­gi­olu won two gold medals for hur­dles and sprint­ing at the Aus­tralian Lit­tle Ath­let­ics Cham­pi­onships held in Ade­laide re­cently.

The 13-year-old, nick­named the Ant by his peers, won the 80 me­tre hur­dles and 200 me­tres sprint and is the Aus­tralian cham­pion in his age group.

He was the only WA ath­lete to re­turn with two gold medals.

The young ath­lete is part of the Bel­mont Lit­tle Ath­let­ics Cen­tre.

An­toine has smashed 30year-old records at the cen­tre and state records and has a pend­ing 80 me­tre hur­dles record for Aus­tralia.

He has com­peted in ath­let­ics since has was five years old and is aiming for a spot in the Aus­tralian ath­let­ics team to com­pete at the 2022 Com­mon­wealth Games in Dur­ban in South Africa.

“I have made many friends and en­joyed ev­ery sea­son,” he said.

“Ath­let­ics is about fam­ily, fun, fit­ness and your own per­sonal best.”

BLAC pa­tron Bel­mont MLA Glenys God­frey said she was very proud of his achieve­ments.

She said it was tes­ta­ment to the cen­tre’s ex­cel­lence in train­ing young ath­letes.

“An­toine is a ded­i­cated young man and I know how com­mit­ted him and his fam­ily are to his sport­ing ac­tiv­i­ties,” Mrs God­frey said.
