‘Ant’ soldiers to dual national titles
BELMONT teenager Antoine Vargiolu won two gold medals for hurdles and sprinting at the Australian Little Athletics Championships held in Adelaide recently.
The 13-year-old, nicknamed the Ant by his peers, won the 80 metre hurdles and 200 metres sprint and is the Australian champion in his age group.
He was the only WA athlete to return with two gold medals.
The young athlete is part of the Belmont Little Athletics Centre.
Antoine has smashed 30year-old records at the centre and state records and has a pending 80 metre hurdles record for Australia.
He has competed in athletics since has was five years old and is aiming for a spot in the Australian athletics team to compete at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Durban in South Africa.
“I have made many friends and enjoyed every season,” he said.
“Athletics is about family, fun, fitness and your own personal best.”
BLAC patron Belmont MLA Glenys Godfrey said she was very proud of his achievements.
She said it was testament to the centre’s excellence in training young athletes.
“Antoine is a dedicated young man and I know how committed him and his family are to his sporting activities,” Mrs Godfrey said.
