Lochlan’s cage eggs war

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - NEWS - Kaylee Martin

AT just 11 years old, Kensington resident Lochlan Barrett has hit the ground running on his mission to ban caged eggs in Australia.

The Year 6 student is the brains behind a petition addressed to the Prime Minister that called for the immediate ban of caged eggs in the country.

“I found out about this issue while researching ideas on how to make a difference in my community for my PEAC project,” Lochlan said.

“The most shocking things I learnt about the egg industry was the crushing or gassing of one-day old male chicks and the de-beaking of hens.”

With his new-found discoveries about the mistreatment of chickens, Lochlan said he needed to make a change.

“I believe the treatment of chickens is inhumane and we should stop the awful practice,” he said.

“There are over 11 million caged hens in Australia in small cages with two to seven hens.

“Hens should be able to live a life as close to natural as possible, they need to be able to walk around, stretch their wings and more.”

The petition is just the beginning for the young activist. Lochlan said he already had plans to start more petitions and write to organisations about caged eggs.

“I want to write to the RSPCA and ask them to review their position on debeaking hens, as it is not prohibited under their system,” he said. “And I want to lead by example and never eat caged eggs.

“I would like to adopt a rescued battery hen or two.”
