WARNE DOES GOOD JOB OF BAD CHARACTER

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - LIFESTYLE -

EAST Victoria Park resident Samantha Warne is set to go behind bars when she appears in the WA premier of Bad Girls - The Musical.

The musical is based on the UK TV series and follows the lives of women in prison who are on a journey in a variety of traumatic circumstances.

Warne plays prostitute Julie Saunders.

“She’s one half of sassy, soliciting duo ‘The Julies’,” Warne said.

“Wanting to provide for her beloved son David is ultimately what drove Julie into a life of prostitution.

“This is where she met her best friend and partner in crime Julie Johnston, who was also turning tricks to provide for her family.”

Warne said her character presented quite crass, but her loyalty was not something that could be faulted.

“She has a big heart and is always ready and willing to help her friends. It would be very easy to fall into a stereotypical portrayal of the character so I want to make sure the audience sees Julie's heart, beyond her inappropriate passes at the prison guards,” she said.

“Although Bad Girls presents some confronting themes such as drug abuse, domestic violence and sexual abuse, these are offset against clever dark humour and some lighthearted musical numbers.”
