Asbestos probe wider

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - NEWS -

THE Perth Stadium and Fiona Stanley Hospital contain facade products from Chinese facade specialists Yuanda – a company in the spotlight after the discovery of white asbestos in facade panels on the eighth floor of the Perth Children’s Hospital.

But Health Minister John Day said very different products were used at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

He said there was no evidence of asbestos in anything other than the penetrated panel at the Perth Children’s Hospital.

More than 100 panels there will be replaced.

Asbestos was discovered by a worker during the installation of a ceiling fan which Teasury’s Strategic Projects executive director Richard Man said was “virtually an act of chance”.

Builders John Holland will do an audit of any other similar panels or materials at the Perth Children’s Hospital.

“The State will assess the outcome of that audit with John Holland and determine whether any further investigation is required,” Mr Mann said.

Mr Day described the Perth Children’s Hospital discovery as “disappointing” and said there needed to be a full investigation as the panels had compliance certification.
