Traffic changes concern

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - OPINION - Tim Slater

BELMONT Mayor Phil Marks has received emails from concerned residents following the closure of Second Street in Redcliffe for construction works.

Cr Marks said the emails had detailed problems with the Boulder Avenue and First Street intersections on Brearley Avenue after Second Street was closed.

Residents have also raised concerns about the Boulder Avenue and First Street intersection, and traffic on Kanowna Avenue near schools.

The City’s technical services director Ric Lutey said it was aware of the inquiries.

He said the construction contractor and the Public Transport Authority were monitoring traffic through a traffic safety provider and an independent auditor.

“The City is also mindful that there will be further traffic changes when Brearley Avenue is closed south of First Street,” Mr Lutey said at the council’s June 28 meeting. “Safety issues and concerns will change once this closure occurs and will be dealt with as and when they arise.”

He said the City was looking carefully at plans to control traffic on residential streets.

“For the time being, detours need to be in place so that infrastructure can be developed,” he said.

“The detour routes and provisions are also being reviewed, with an additional give way sign being at the Boulder Avenue and Second Street intersection.”

He said it was inevitable that there would be more traffic in the area while the detours were in place.

“The City is working with the PTA and the contractors to monitor the situation to ensure the best possible solution,” he said.

Resident Richard Foster CALL TO BOOK 9355 5090 said locals were angry about traffic conditions.

“We have been telling authorities for the last five to six years that the First Street/Brearley Avenue intersection is dangerous,” Mr Foster said.

“Now we are stuck with this intersection until the train station is completed, which will continue to be used by traffic to and from the airport.”
