Walkers take great strides
THE Belmont Forum Mall Walking Group celebrated its 10th anniversary last week.
With over 40 regular members, and run by volunteer Council on the Ageing Walk Leaders, it offers walking and stretching in the safe indoor environment of Belmont Forum.
Rae Dewhurst was one of seven original members who started walking around the forum to exercise and meet new friends.
“It’s easy to be motivated if there is a crowd otherwise it’s a bit hard to do it on your own,” Ms Dewhurst said.
She said it was good to walk around the centre during the winter months, but it was a bit hot in summer.
Group leader Gwen Davies received a special bouquet for her support of the group.
Eight other members received certificates for their participation.
COTA Active Ageing manager Phil Airey said the group, which meets twice a week, helps to reconnect seniors and keep them active and independent.
“It is also a great place to meet new friends,” Mr Airey said.
Belmont Forum marketing manager Julie Elliott said the walkers had clocked up thousands of kilometres, built new friendships and kept fit.
“We’re so delighted to host the mall walkers at Belmont Forum and provide the opportunity for walkers to exercise in a friendly and safe environment,” Ms Elliott said.
Mr Airey thanked the City of Belmont, Belmont MLA Glenys Godfrey and Stay on Your Feet WA for their support.
